WFMZ News – Tesla sedan hit by train after self-driving error in Berks County, stops train traffic
Editors note: Yes, the Tesla was driving itself. Yes, driving down the railroad tracks is as dumb a mistake as an automated system could make, and this is not the first time! And yes, Tesla is in no way capable of running a robotaxi service. They simply don’t have the tech.

SINKING SPRING BORO., Pa. – Western Berks Fire Commissioner Jared Renshaw said a Tesla was in self-driving mode when it made a left at a railroad crossing.
He said it happened on South Hull Street in Sinking Spring around 5:30 a.m. Saturday.
“Went down the tracks approximately 40-50 feet. They all exited the vehicle, got their belongings out,” said Commissioner Renshaw.
He said a train came and hit the vehicle a few minutes later.
The Fire Commissioner said a mirror was damaged on the Tesla and that nobody involved in the incident was injured.
“When I arrived on scene, all of the occupants were already out of the vehicle, so they were traveling, you know at 5:28 in the morning. There was three people inside the car,” said Commissioner Renshaw.

He said the car was lifted by a crane, since rolling it back to a flatbed could have caused damage to the battery, located on the bottom of the car and it was very close to the train.
“We’ve had accidents involving Tesla’s that have been in vehicle accidents, but nobody has expressed to us that the vehicle was in self-drive mode when it happened,” said Commissioner Renshaw.
