Waymo has received approval to operate at Mineta San Jose International Airport, the self-driving car company’s first major presence at a California airport.

The Google-owned tech company will start employee testing this year before rolling out service to the public in Terminals A and B, airport officials said. It is aiming to expand operations to the rest of San Jose as well.

It’s only the second major airport that Waymo has received approval for, following Phoenix Sky Harbor.

“It’s the perfect time for Waymo’s autonomous vehicles to begin to roll into San Jose, the Capital of Silicon Valley,” Mayor Matt Mahan said in a statement.

“With San Jose at the epicenter of the biggest sporting events of 2026, Waymo is an ideal mode of transportation that will help visitors move around the area smoothly and safely,” he said. The World Cup and Super Bowl are coming to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara next year.

Waymo has expanded to operating more than 2,000 cars across the U.S., with service in San Francisco, Phoenix and Los Angeles. The company was granted its first permit last month to start testing in New York.

“Waymo was born in Silicon Valley, and our testing and eventual commercial deployment at the airport will help us offer a valuable service to travelers in San Jose and more of the Bay Area, as we help keep innovation on the move,” said Annabel Chang, Waymo’s head of U.S. state and local public policy.
