CBS Austin – Waymo vehicles caught illegally passing AISD school buses 19 times since August 1

Editors note: prove positive that Waymos are not better drivers than humans. Waymos simply don’t follow the traffic laws, even after two software updates. Do Waymo engineers really know what they are doing??

Yes, 19 times caught on video!

AUSTIN, Texas — New footage from the Austin Independent School District shows Waymo vehicles repeatedly illegally passing stopped school buses with flashing stop signs and red lights.

The incidents were captured between August 22 and November 14.

CBS Austin reached out to Austin ISD to ask how many times its stop arm cameras have caught this, and they say it’s happened 19 times.

In a letter last month, Austin ISD requested that Waymo halt operations between 5:20 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. and from 3 -7 p.m. until ‘more in-depth software updates’ were completed.

Waymo sent the following statement to CBS Austin:

Improving road safety is our top priority at Waymo and we’re deeply invested in safe interaction with school buses. We swiftly implemented software updates to address this and will continue to rapidly improve.

A software issue was identified that contributed to incidents with school buses in which a Waymo vehicle may initially slow or stop for a school bus but then ends up proceeding.

We moved quickly to address the issue once it was identified, including by implementing software updates. We will continue to track and implement more as needed.

During the incidents, the AV proceeded cautiously when no individuals were in the path of the vehicle.

We provide hundreds of thousands of fully autonomous paid trips every week in some of the most challenging driving environments in Austin and the other cities in which we operate.
